Pension Indexation A petition was launched this week to support the representatives of associations of retirees sitting on the Consultative Committee on services to retirees and the issues of indexation. This petition calls on the part of the Quebec government to re-index pensions to ensure the recovery and maintenance of the purchasing power of retirees. The text of the petition is attached as a pdf file. AREQ will collect signatures from its members and the public in the coming weeks. Other retiree associations will follow suit – the return address for the petition is AREQ’s offices. Please consider having this petition circulated to your membership in whatever fashion you judge appropriate. In particular some of you have planned events in the coming weeks and this might be an efficient way of collecting numerous signatures. Your members should also consider circulating the petition among family and friends sympathetic to the cause. The petition will be filed in the National Assembly this spring. Recall that in 2010, the Parliamentary Commission on Public Finances of the National Assembly recognized "the need to find a way to alleviate if not eliminate, the loss of purchasing power of retirees due to the indexation of pensions for the years 1982 to 1999. The government subsequently announced the creation of the Consultative Committee on services to retirees and the issues of indexation. The committee consists of representatives of retiree associations, unions and managers. Representatives of CARRA and Treasury Board also participate in its work. The Consultative Committee is scheduled to present its report in September 2012. EdZ P.S. The original French version of the petition should be signed, but for your info, the following is a liberal translation of the petition:
Recovery and maintenance of the purchasing power of retirees from the public and parapublic sectors
WHEREAS the Government of Quebec ruled, in an arbitrary and unilateral manner, to de-index pensions for the years 1982-1999;
WHEREAS the Parliamentary Commission on Public Finances of the National Assembly has recognized, in 2010, "the need to find a way to alleviate if not eliminate, the loss of purchasing power of retirees due to the indexation of pensions;
We, the signatories of this petition, in agreement with associations of retirees of the public and parapublic sectors, ask the Government of Quebec to re-index pensions to ensure recovery and maintenance of their purchasing power. Pension Indexation Petition |
